It was supposed to be a quiet year for HBO on Emmy night. This was to be the year of GREY'S ANATOM Y and 24. But at the party at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood Sunday night, HBO executives and television stars from across the spectrum celebrated another stellar year for the cable network. HBO took home 26 statuettes, 9 in Sunday night's primetime broadcast, and 17 last Saturday at the Creative Arts presentation. NBC was second with 14 wins, followed by ABC with 11, FOX with 10 and CBS with 9.
ELIZABETH I, the HBO miniseries starring HELEN MIRREN and JEREMY IRONS took 9 Emmys all by itself, including Outstanding Lead Actress for MIRREN and Outstanding Supporting Actor for IRONS, both looking jubilant at the party. THE GIRL IN THE CAFE, another HBO made for television movie took 3 wins. JEREMY PIVEN took home Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as agent Ari Gold in ENTOURAGE.
Parties for FOX, at Wolfgang Puck's Spago in Beverly Hills, ET at the Mondrian Hotel, and TV Guige at Social in Hollywood were festive, with Prince and Pink playing sets for some lucky guests, but it was the HBO bash that, once again, was the place to be.
